Rachel Sutherland

Rachel’s work is largely a record of her observations in many lands over the years, being well travelled, rendered in pen, ink and water colour.

More recently settled in Belgium, she is painting landscapes and portraits on canvas. In any work she strives to illustrate it’s ‘essence’, a nebulous concept based on contemplation of the object under study.

Rachel’s work has two distinct avenues: abstract and figurative. A keen observer of life, she draws fluently and this has been developed through the use of oil pastel studies and a series of landscape paintings. Her abstract work is a celebration of, really, the Indian miniature, of colour and composition.

“I believe that life gives me all I need. All I need to do is look, either outside, or inside, the inspiration is a constant joy.”

Stained Glass, Glass Jewellery & Watercolours

After gaining a degree from Durham University I worked in a National Nature Reserve in County Durham then trained as a primary teacher working in Hull and Leeds but finally returned to my initial love – Art.

While at University I used painting as a form of relaxation and became Chairman of the Arts Committee.

Over 20 years ago I attended an evening class where began my love of Stained Glass. Initially I worked in my kitchen then a caravan then a rather cold garage which after 18 years has been converted to a very cosy and clean workshop with my Studio at one end acting as a mini Gallery . It is ideal for visitors during the annual Perthshire Open Studios or any other time of year.

I particularly enjoy designing original art, converting people’s ideas and lives into beautiful stained glass heirlooms like windows, hangings or any other glass art.

Jewellery making began when I was approached to make a daisy necklace some years ago. The vast range of stunning glass lends itself to jewellery but I also like to add pearls, shells, beads and wire.  With various collections being inspired by travels, my collection has spread far and wide including, USA, Russia, Australia, France, Germany selling from select Galleries and also Gleneagles Hotel for a number of years.

In more recent years my Birds have taken off … so to speak! The first being a Father’s day present for my own Father. Robins are ever popular but others have included various Tits, Swallows, Wrens, the very popular Puffins, Grebes, Gannets and many more. Each developing their own personality as the pieces come together on the workbench.

I have worked on a number of community/charitable projects including a daisy/poppy panel for the hospice in Perth where visitors during POS one year had the opportunity to foil some glass to be added to the panel . Another project now hanging in The Community School of Auchterarder involved working with a number of teenagers with Autistic Spectrum Condition who created 3 beautiful and moving panels. In addition to these I have given a number of talks to groups in and around Perth and Dundee.

Last year I picked up my paintbrush again and began painting and drawing primarily wildlife and some buildings including Venice scenes and French landscapes.

Each year I take part in Perthshire Open Studios being one of the founder committee members, I was also on the committee for Creative Perthshire.  I have had work in the ArTay exhibitions during Perth Festival of the Arts, PVAF exhibitions, various showcase exhibitions, more recently work has been on show at the Perthshire Creates display in Perth and Perth Museums. In addition pieces have been in a number of Galleries and shops around Scotland.

My work was first put on show to the public in my house as a mini Christmas Craft Fair , after the second year it became clear we needed a bigger premises. We then moved to the local village hall where we now have an annual event showcasing very high quality artist’s work being sold by the designers/makers/artists themselves in a relaxed, fun, Christmassy atmosphere heading in to it’s 19th year.

I trade under the name of ‘Catriona Glass’
